WHAT SHOULD I DO THIS WEEK?

These days, year 2005 applicants are starting to prepare themselves for Applying.  In this period of year the most important thing is studying for English exams. The most common English exam is TOEFL. Thus, in this Monthly A.A we try to provide you with useful information about TOEFL. TOEFL is an English exam which North American universities require to measure the applicants' English abilities. The TOEFL test has three sections: listening, reading, and writing. ETS offers TOEFL on computer in most regions of the world.

MAKE A PRIMARY LIST OF YOUR MOST WANTED UNIVERSITIES

You should gradually make a list of universities in which you have the highest chance of getting accepted, and write down their deadlines. It helps you to be approximately aware of the deadlines to complete your materials on time and determine your test date.

For choosing universities you may check universities' web sites. You may firstly choose from universities' rankings from related sites. Then you should consider each university's "minimum requirements" for admission. Pick universities which match your case the most. In the next Monthly A.A, we will present information on how to choose appropriate universities and ranking web sites.

INTRODUCTION TO SOME USEFUL WEB SITES:

ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

1)      I want to take admission in fall 2005 in USA. What is the best time to take GRE and TOEFL? (From: N.C.B)

We recommend you to register for TOEFL early enough to take it in your desirable date. The best date depends on the deadlines of universities that you would like to apply. You should be aware that after you take your exams, your score will be reported in 2-4 weeks (because of reviewing your writing section). Therefore, the ideal time would be four weeks before the earliest deadline. You may check out your universities' deadlines and their policies about score report in their web sites. Some universities accept score report after they deadlines and some do not.

2)      I am a BE and want to take GRE exam. Came across your schedule plan, but since its June end I'll b a month late in my preparations than what has been suggested by you (June itself). Do you think it'll be too late? Also from where will I be able to get the list of universities? kindly help (From: A.M)

Our Time-Table about preparing for English exams is just a suggestion. The actual required amount of time to prepare for English exams depends on your English abilities. Therefore, you should decide whether it is late or not by considering the level of your English knowledge. However, for engineering majors, the most important part in GRE exam is "Quantative" (Mathematics part) which you can well prepare for it in the future month.

In the next Monthly A.A we will present how you are able to get the list of universities and their ranks.

3)      Sir, I am planning for spring admissions. (Jan 2005), so when is the deadline for applying for universities? Please do reply me sir. Then there is a talk that we won't be getting aid if we go for spring admissions. Is it true? Expecting a favorable reply. Thanking you. (From: S.B.K)

Deadlines differ for each university. You should check them in your desirable universities' web sites.

It is not a law or policy that you won't get aid in spring semesters, but it is unlikely. Some universities do not have fund for offering TA or Fellowship in spring semesters (you should check this out in their web sites). For getting RA you should contact professors and find out about their proposals and if they have enough money to hire students for Spring semester.

Why it is unlikely to get aid in spring semesters? Because universities and professors substitute new students with their graduated students and most of students would be graduated in fall semester.

4)      I have been rejected the visa under section 214(b). What are my chances of getting the visa if I reapply with all the required documents? (From: V.B)

The most important rejection reason for F-1 applicants is document deficiency. That’s why F-1 applicants may apply for visa again. Therefore, if in your next try you present sufficient documents your chance for getting accepted in interview is high. In this case, your last rejection does not affect your case that much.

5)      How to register for the GRE test? What are the prerequisites for that? (From: T)

It is explained above in this Monthly A.A.

6)      I have to urgently apply for the coming spring 2005. Is it safe to apply in the spring semester? (From D.P)

Most universities do not offer admission for spring semester. It would reduce the pool of your choice. If you concern about aid it is mentioned in question number 3

7)      I am a fresh pharmacy graduate. I got 1310 in GRE. I want to pursue my MS in pharmaceutical chemistry in USA/Canada. How can I get sure admission and financial aid? (From S.S)

No one can assure you of getting admission and financial aid. You should prepare your materials and apply and wait for results. Your GRE score indicates that you have chance for getting both admission and financial aid; however it also depends on your grades, SOP, Recommendation Letters, etc.
